    There is actually a kind of symmetry in Hastert's position. He is willing to accept that the administration doesn't need to tell Congress about what it is doing, while insisting that Congressmen don't need to answer questions from executive branch agencies.

    But this is probably coincidence. What it looks like is that Hastert is outraged on behalf of some unknown number of Congressmen who could be investigated on corruption charges as Jefferson has been. Even for members is districts drawn to be safe, this is a politically inexpedient appearance to present. One should never look as if one were pro-corruption; some plausible alternative explanation should at least suggest itself. I can't think of what that might be at the moment.

    Incidentally, what this affair also suggests is that Congressional Democrats' attitude toward corruption among their members is substantially identical to Congressional Republicans'. Only their circumstances are different.
