You know what I mean. He's was a SAO. He's now a "former." He was a big source for "Plan of Attack" (reported around, say, the summer of 2003). Oh, and he's not returning calls.
OK, now I really must go finish my column and "wedding" for the weekend. (To wedding: verb; to spend the weekend, often in a remote-but-accessible locale, drinking white wine and dancing the ho'ra.)
UPDATE: More circumstantial evidence:
In an interview on CNN on Wednesday, [Wash Post editor Len] Downie said the source had told Mr. Woodward that the source's reference to the wife of Joseph C. Wilson IV, a critic of the administration, had occurred only as "a very brief part of a much longer interview" that Mr. Woodward was conducting for his book about the Iraq war, "Plan of Attack," which was published in 2004. Mr. Downie said the source was someone with whom Mr. Woodward "had conducted many interviews with for his book."
Woodward is, of course, a status-whore. He doesn't do repeated interviews with even medium levels. Just tippy-top SAOs...
P.S. One of the reasons I bet Woodward kept mum: His source probably did only mention Plame casually and didn't mean to out her. That also jibes with it being Armitage, who doesn't seem like a guy who'd want to be involved in a Wilson pushback.
As you probably know, Hadley is also mentioned as a possibility.
If it was Armitage who was Woodward's source--well, if Armitage intentionally leaked to Woodward--that puts him in jeopardy, right? He could face charges if Fitzgerald thinks it could be proven.
That's not a rosey picture because he was Powell's right hand man.
Though, if, say, Armitage was Woody's primary source and Armitage wasn't a part of the push ing/smear job against the Wilsons then it opens up a can of conspiracy for those beyond Armitage who leaked to reporters.
Instead of putting a lid on the leak (not confirming anything), they (Libby, Rove, and whomever else) spilled the entire pool to reporters (by confirming).
