I have a new piece in Slate that says--with Haditha and the torture scandal--the time has come from the military to create an attorney general's or special prosecutor's office.
As it stands now, commanders, and only commanders, have the power to charge soldiers with crimes. That's a problem, especially when responsibility for the crime runs up the chain of command.
Any way, not a long piece--and not as wonky as it might seem. And here it is, again.
It bothers me that there was an 8-year-old girl in the house when they bombed it. The US forces must have known that becasue they must have been watching the house to make sure the Fab Mr. Z was in fact in there. So, why does the US military just have to kill a child?
