From the public advocate folks at the Center on Democracy and Technology:
Last-Minute Deal Shields NSA Snooping
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) has agreed to a deal under which telephone companies won't have to explain if and why they handed over phone the phone records of millions of Americans to the National Security Agency (NSA).Under the agreement, the White House has agreed to consider Specter's bill to retroactively validate the NSA programs, which CDT has argued, are illegal under current law. CDT has repeatedly called on Congress to obtain the full facts about the NSA surveillance programs before making any legislative decisions. The Judiciary Committee deal would frustrate that process, and leave innocent Americans in the dark about domestic spying activities, while reducing judicial and congressional oversight of domestic snooping.
