I was struck by reports that Brad and Angelina, those selfless humanitarians, have employed the Namibian government to crackdown on journalists:
The government, which has seen its profile as a tourist destination increased by the celebrity visit, has arrested photographers, confiscated film, set up large green barriers on the beach to shield the couple and their children Zahara and Maddox, ringed the hotel with heavy security and threatened to expel any journalist trying to cover the birth without the parents' permission.
Now, a friend of mine who's a top editor at a celebrity-focused weekly has forwarded me some email about a reporter of hers who's in Namibia, and has received extra-special hooligan-esque treatment from Brad and Angelina's crew.
"Mickey"--Brad and Angelina's personal bodyguard and a former special forces guy-- "is having me followed," wrote the reporter. "I have been to the police twice - strange men sitting outside my house."
An editor at the magazine spoke with the reporter and recounted her story:
On Tuesday when she went to the police station to complain (and the man who had been following her since Tuesday morning, was also asked to attend), the man told her his orders from Mickey were to 'make her scared, follow her around and give her a taste of her own medicine'.
After the police meeting on Tuesday, the stalker refused to continue to follow [the reporter] and told Mickey he thought his actions were dirty and he didn't want to be involved any more.
So then yesterday (Wed) [the reporter] got a phone call early in the morning from another man saying he was now going to follow her instead. He began the conversation by saying, "I am not a psychopath or a killer but I have been asked to introduce myself. I am going to be following your every move from now on."
True to his word he has been outside her house since 6am this morning.
[The reporter] is scared, she is a single mum with a child.
Classy stuff, Brangelina.
yeah, it's not too classy, but in the case of Brad and Angelina, they're totally harmless.
More attention should be focused on real goons like the Minutemen and Blackwater contractors. Much closer to home and more threatening.
Brad and Angelina just happen to have enough of everything they need and could ever want, and obviously don't want their parenthood exposed.
